Ghana’s nationwide two-day clean-up exercise officially began on Friday, July 10, 2026, as government officials, security personnel, and residents took to the streets across seven flood-affected regions to clear debris and desilt drains.
President John Dramani Mahama had earlier declared July 10 and 11 as National General Cleaning Days in the seven regions affected by recent floods, directing ministers, MPs, MMDCEs and citizens to lead the nationwide clean-up exercise to prevent future flooding.
The exercise is being carried out under the theme “Our Actions, Our Future: Cleaning Ghana after the floods.”
The exercise is taking place in the Greater Accra, Volta, Central, Western, Western North, Ashanti and Eastern regions, which were affected by the recent floods.
Markets and shops were ordered closed throughout Friday and Saturday to allow drains to be desilted, refuse cleared, and flood-affected markets disinfected.
In Greater Accra alone, the exercise covers 104 locations, running from 6:00 am to 1:00 pm on both days, targeting choked drains, accumulated refuse and damaged public spaces.
The clean-up follows deadly flooding that struck the capital and other parts of the country on June 29, which claimed at least 12 lives and affected about 38,800 people, damaging homes, businesses and public facilities.
Friday’s activities were intended mainly for government workers, while Saturday has been set aside for members of the public to join clean-up activities in their communities.
