Two people have been killed and several others injured after a gunman opened fire inside an apartment building in downtown Minneapolis, United States.
The shooting happened on Wednesday, September 2, 2026, at a high-rise apartment building near the city’s convention centre.
Police received the first 911 call at around 4:36pm after reports that someone had been shot.
Officers arrived at the building within two minutes and found injured people in the lobby.
They then heard more gunshots coming from an upper floor and moved towards the sound.
When officers reached the upper floor, they encountered a haze that made it difficult for them to see.
Minneapolis Police spokesperson Garrett Parten said:
“Officers followed the sound of gunfire to the upper floor of the building, and on that floor, officers encountered a haze that significantly limited their visibility.”
Seven people were shot during the incident.
One victim died at the scene, while another was taken to hospital but later died.
Three other shooting victims were also taken to hospital.
Three police officers were injured during the response.
Two of the officers suffered gunshot wounds. One was shot in the leg, while another was shot twice in the abdomen and underwent surgery.
A third officer suffered an injury that was described as non-life-threatening.
Authorities said the injured officers are expected to recover.
Four other officers reportedly experienced health problems after being exposed to an unknown substance in the building.
Two more officers were injured in a squad car crash while responding to the shooting.
The suspected gunman was also found dead.
Police said they were familiar with the suspect, but authorities had not officially announced a motive for the shooting at the time of the initial reports.
Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey praised the officers who responded to the attack.
He said:
“They rescued victims, brought people to safety, helped get approximately four people to the hospital, all while getting shot at themselves. We’re all standing with the victims and families impacted by this senseless act.”
The FBI, Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension and other law enforcement agencies are assisting with the investigation.
