US-Iran war news: Fresh US strikes target Iran after attacks on ships in Strait of Hormuz

The United States launched a fresh round of military strikes against Iran on Wednesday, saying the operation was aimed at protecting freedom of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz. The move came just hours after US President Donald Trump said an interim agreement intended to end the conflict with Iran was “over.”

The latest escalation follows a series of incidents in one of the world’s most strategically important waterways, raising concerns over regional stability and global energy supplies.

Iran said on Wednesday that it had carried out strikes on US military installations in Bahrain and Kuwait. In response, US forces launched retaliatory attacks against Iranian targets.

The confrontation was triggered by attacks on three cargo ships in the Strait of Hormuz on Tuesday. Although Iran has not officially accepted responsibility for the incidents, the attacks have significantly increased tensions in the region.

US says operation aims to protect key shipping route

Announcing the latest military action, US Central Command said the strikes were intended to weaken Iran’s ability to threaten international shipping through the Strait of Hormuz.

‘At the direction of the Commander in Chief, US Central Command forces have started conducting additional strikes against Iran to further degrade their ability to threaten freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz,’ the military command said in a post on X.

It further added, ‘The United States is holding Iran accountable for recent unjustified aggression against commercial shipping and civilian crews freely navigating a vital international waterway.’

Strategic waterway remains at centre of conflict

The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world’s busiest maritime routes, with nearly one-fifth of global oil supplies passing through it. Its strategic importance has long given Iran significant influence in the region.

Analysts believe that, despite not claiming responsibility for the recent attacks on commercial vessels, Tehran has used such actions to reinforce its strategic position while continuing negotiations with the United States over a long-term peace agreement.

The latest exchange of strikes has put further strain on an already fragile ceasefire and weakened hopes of turning the memorandum of understanding signed on June 17 into a lasting peace agreement.

Speaking during a press conference at the NATO summit in Ankara, Turkey, President Donald Trump questioned whether any future agreement with Iran would be sustainable.

‘If we make a deal with Iran I’m not sure that will stick,’ Trump said. ‘I found them to be very dishonourable people.’

However, despite his criticism of Tehran, Trump said he did not believe the situation would necessarily escalate into another full-scale war. He also acknowledged that it remains uncertain whether negotiations on a permanent agreement will continue.
