Chainsaw operators working in a forested area have come under scrutiny after a video surfaced showing one of them holding up what appears to be a rare flying squirrel, allegedly killed when the tree it was living in was cut down.
In the clip, one of them is seen standing barefoot among logging debris, stretching out the animal’s skin-like membrane to display its unusual wing-like structure, something many viewers admitted they’d never seen before.
Unlike typical squirrels, this one possessed the folds of skin that allow it to glide between trees, a feature that made the sight all the more striking, and for many online, this was their first encounter with the species altogether.
According to the person recording, the operators mentioned they were still on the lookout for a second squirrel, “We’re searching for the other one,” suggesting more than one may have been present in or around the felled tree before the chainsaws went through it.
The footage has since triggered concern among viewers who pointed out the ecological toll such operations can have on wildlife rarely seen by the public, especially species already considered endangered, arguing that incidents like this often go unnoticed simply because so few people know these animals exist in the first place.
