Manchester United began their preparations for the 2026-27 season with a 1-0 defeat to Wrexham after Sam Smith’s first-half strike separated the sides in a pre-season friendly in Helsinki.
United manager Michael Carrick named an experienced starting line-up despite the absence of several players still recovering from World Cup duty, but his side failed to find a breakthrough against the newly promoted Championship club.
Smith scores decisive goal
United created the first meaningful chances of the contest, with Patrick Dorgu seeing an effort deflected wide before Wrexham striker Sam Smith almost turned Mason Mount’s corner into his own net, striking the crossbar.
Joshua Zirkzee also went close on two occasions, including a low effort that drifted narrowly wide of Arthur Okonkwo’s post.
However, Wrexham took the lead six minutes before half-time. Lewis O’Brien delivered a low cross from the left that travelled through Harry Maguire’s legs, allowing an unmarked Smith to tap home from close range.
Both teams made wholesale substitutions after the interval as Carrick gave several academy players an opportunity to impress.
United fail to find response
Wrexham nearly doubled their advantage when Davis Keillor-Dunn raced through on goal, but goalkeeper Radek Vitek produced a smart save with his foot to keep United in the contest.
United’s youngsters dominated possession for much of the second half, but struggled to create clear-cut opportunities.
Ethan Wheatley and Shea Lacey both tested Danny Ward with routine efforts, while a late appeal for a penalty was waved away by the referee.
New signing Andrey Santos made his unofficial debut for United and produced an early defensive clearance after Tom Heaton spilled the ball under pressure.
The match offered few chances overall, with United registering five shots to Wrexham’s three, while both teams managed two efforts on target.
