An abroad based Nigerian man has sparked reactions online after claiming that in Texas, someone can allegedly become married without even realising it.
Sharing his experience, he narrated how his friend’s girlfriend reportedly filed for divorce despite the fact that they never had a formal wedding.
“In Texas, you can enter into marriage without being aware. You’re walking freely, thinking you’re a single man, meanwhile you’re a married man,” he said.
According to him, the lady based her claim on the fact that they had been living together, shared the same address, and were publicly seen as a couple.
He explained that his friend’s only ‘offence’ was inviting his girlfriend to move into his house to save money, not knowing it could later be interpreted differently.
“My homeboy’s girlfriend just filed for a divorce, meanwhile they were never married. She’s seeking half of his assets. For the past few months, they were living together, sharing the same mailing address, and he was parading her as his wife,” he added.
The man went on to warn others to be careful about cohabitation, especially in places where common-law marriage applies.
He added that situations like this may be one of the reasons some men appear to avoid commitment conversations.
