A teenage cattle herder has been shot dead and several livestock killed in a fresh attack on a grazing community in Plateau State.
The victim, identified as 15-year-old Sadi Aliyu, was reportedly attacked by suspected gunmen while tending cattle in Sabon Gidan Kanar, located in Jos South Local Government Area.
The incident, which occurred during grazing activities, also resulted in the death of 13 cattle, while 11 others were reportedly unaccounted for after the attack.
Speaking on the development on Saturday, Chairman of the Plateau State chapter of the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN), Ibrahim Yusuf Babayo, said the attackers invaded the grazing area and opened fire on the herders.
Babayo said the teenager died at the scene, while several animals were shot during the assault.
According to him, the matter has been reported to security agencies, including the Bukuru B Division of the Nigeria Police Force and Sector 6 of Operation Enduring Peace.
He described the attack as a serious threat to peace and stability in the state, stressing that repeated attacks on herders and their livestock could undermine efforts towards peaceful coexistence.
The MACBAN leader called on security agencies to conduct a thorough investigation, apprehend those responsible and ensure they face justice.
He also urged federal, state and local authorities to strengthen measures aimed at safeguarding lives and property, regardless of ethnicity or occupation.
While appealing for restraint among affected residents and members of the herding community, Babayo advised against reprisals, urging citizens to allow security agencies to handle the situation through lawful means.
He reaffirmed the association’s commitment to dialogue, peace and legal channels in resolving disputes.
