The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has announced a significant reduction in road traffic crashes during the 2026 Eid-el-Kabir celebrations, recording a 27 per cent decline in crashes and a 22 per cent drop in the number of crash victims compared to the corresponding period in 2025.
The Corps Public Education Officer, Osondu Ohaeri, disclosed this in a statement issued on Saturday in Abuja, describing the achievement as one of the agency’s most notable operational successes in recent years.
According to Ohaeri, the outcome reflects the effectiveness of the corps’ proactive traffic management measures, extensive public enlightenment campaigns, strengthened enforcement operations and improved emergency response mechanisms deployed during the festive period.
He revealed that road traffic crashes recorded during the 2026 Eid-el-Kabir Special Patrol Operations fell from 191 cases in 2025 to 142 this year. Similarly, the number of people involved in road crashes declined from 1,364 in 2025 to 1,064 in 2026.
The FRSC spokesman further noted that injuries sustained from crashes also dropped considerably. Statistics from the operation showed a 25.4 per cent reduction in the number of injured persons, decreasing from 576 in 2025 to 430 this year.
“These impressive gains represent hundreds of lives protected and families spared the devastating consequences of road traffic crashes,” Ohaeri said.
He attributed the positive results to the strategic deployment of personnel and operational assets along major highways and critical traffic corridors across the country.
According to him, the corps sustained round-the-clock patrols, intelligence-driven surveillance, motorised chain patrol operations, prompt rescue services, traffic-calming measures and stakeholder collaborations throughout the Sallah period.
He added that continuous public education and awareness campaigns also contributed significantly to safer travel conditions for millions of Nigerians who travelled before, during and after the celebrations.
Ohaeri quoted the Corps Marshal, Shehu Mohammed, as commending FRSC personnel, Special Marshals and partner agencies for their commitment, professionalism and resilience during the nationwide operation.
Mohammed said the results underscored the impact of strategic planning, sustained enforcement and collective commitment to road safety in reducing crashes on Nigerian roads.
He also expressed appreciation to motorists and other road users who complied with traffic regulations and adhered to the corps’ safety advisories throughout the festive season.
The Corps Marshal reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to strengthening road safety interventions, deepening stakeholder engagement and improving operational efficiency to achieve further reductions in crashes, injuries and fatalities nationwide.
He urged Nigerians to maintain safe road-use practices beyond festive periods, stressing that road safety remains a shared responsibility that requires the active cooperation of all citizens.
