The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has called for an investigation into some lawyers and members of a rival faction led by Tanimu Turaki over alleged false interpretation of court rulings for political purposes.
The party wants the Legal Practitioners Disciplinary Committee (LPDC) and the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) to look into the matter and possibly sanction those involved.
According to PDP, wrongly explaining or twisting court judgments is dangerous because it can damage the judiciary, mislead the public, and weaken democracy.
The issue started after the Turaki-led interim group claimed that the Court of Appeal had cancelled a caretaker committee that organised the PDP national convention which produced the current party leadership.
However, the PDP led by Nyesom Wike rejected the claim, describing it as false and not supported by the Court of Appeal judgment.
In a statement signed by its National Publicity Secretary, the party accused some legal practitioners, including a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, of misrepresenting the court’s decision for political advantage.
The party insisted that the Certified True Copy of the Court of Appeal judgment shows clearly that no such cancellation was made.
It added that the court only dismissed the case as unnecessary because the issues had already been decided by higher courts.
PDP also clarified that the court did not make any statements about certain individuals being mentioned in the false interpretations circulating online.
The party further warned against circulating edited or highlighted copies of the judgment, saying some of them do not reflect the real court document.
It called on security agencies to investigate those spreading false versions of the ruling.
The PDP urged the NBA and LPDC to discipline any lawyer found guilty of misrepresenting court judgments.
It also advised the media to always verify court decisions before publishing reports to avoid confusion.
The party concluded that the judiciary must be respected and protected, warning that distorting court rulings threatens the rule of law and democracy in Nigeria.
