Two newly deployed Mobile Police officers attached to Ayilamo community in Logo Local Government Area of Benue State have been killed in an ambush by suspected armed invaders.
The officers were reportedly attacked at about 6pm on Monday while travelling to escort the Divisional Police Officer of Ayilamo, who was returning to the community from Makurdi.
The latest incident brings to six the number of policemen killed in Ayilamo within three days.
Four Mobile Police officers and seven civilians were killed in an earlier attack on the community on Friday.
The identities of the two officers killed on Monday had yet to be disclosed as of the time of filing this report.
Confirming the incident, the Benue State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Peter Aondongu, said the DPO’s entourage was ambushed while returning from Makurdi to Ayilamo.
Aondongu, who spoke to journalists in Makurdi by telephone on Tuesday, confirmed that two policemen were killed in the attack.
Residents told newsmen that the attackers were suspected to be armed men operating from forests and abandoned villages within Tombo Council Ward of Logo LGA.
They expressed concern over the alleged movement of armed groups through forests and deserted settlements in the area, urging the authorities to sustain security operations to prevent further attacks.
