A battle-tested infantry general has taken charge of Nigeria’s counter-insurgency operations in the North-East, with Major General Ibikunle Ajose appointed Theatre Commander of the Joint Task Force North East, Operation Hadin Kai.
Ajose brings years of command and operational experience to one of the Nigerian military’s most critical security theatres.
Here are seven things to know about the new commander:
1. He is Hadin Kai’s new Theatre Commander
Major General Ibikunle Ajose has been appointed Theatre Commander, Joint Task Force North East, Operation Hadin Kai.
His new role puts him in charge of military operations in the North-East theatre.

2. He is a seasoned infantry general
Ajose is a seasoned infantry officer with extensive experience in military operations and command.
He has served in several key positions during his career in the Nigerian Army.
3. He previously commanded 8 Division
Before his latest appointment, Ajose served as the General Officer Commanding, GOC, 8 Division of the Nigerian Army.
The division is involved in military operations in parts of Nigeria’s North-West.
4. He commanded troops in Operation Fasan Yamma
Ajose also served as Commander, Sector 2, Joint Task Force North-West, Operation Fasan Yamma.
The operation is part of the military’s campaign against banditry and other security threats in the North-West.
5. He served at Army Headquarters
After leaving the 8 Division formation several months ago, Ajose moved to Army Headquarters, Department of Army Operations.
He served there before his appointment as Theatre Commander of Operation Hadin Kai.
6. He brings field experience to the North-East
Ajose’s appointment brings an experienced operational commander to the North-East theatre.
Operation Hadin Kai remains at the centre of Nigeria’s military campaign against Boko Haram and Islamic State West Africa Province, ISWAP, terrorists in the region.

Ajose is also referred to as “General Airborne”, a nickname associated with his military career.
