Air Peace, United Nigeria top August flight delays

Air Peace and United Nigeria Airlines recorded the highest number of delayed domestic flights in August 2026, according to data released by the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority.

The NCAA’s August summary of domestic airline flight disruptions showed that Air Peace delayed 1,330 flights out of the 1,864 operations it conducted during the month.

United Nigeria Airlines recorded 943 delays from 1,231 flights, while Enugu Air had 582 delayed flights out of 878 operations.

Value Jet recorded 435 delays from 767 flights, followed by Overland with 139 delays from 239 operations.

Green Africa recorded 114 delays out of 226 flights, while Umza Air had 52 delays from 403 operations.

Xe Jet recorded 40 delays from 127 flights, while Binani recorded 22 delays from 57 operations. NGEAGLE did not operate any flight during the period.

Across the industry, domestic airlines operated 7,961 flights in August, with 4,765 experiencing delays.

The regulator said 2,801 flights were delayed between 16 minutes and one hour, while 1,322 were delayed between one and two hours.

Another 407 flights experienced delays of between two and three hours, while 235 were delayed for three hours or more.

The NCAA also recorded 36 cancelled flights during the month.

United Nigeria had the highest number of cancellations with eight, followed by Air Peace with seven and Enugu Air with four.

The latest figures came shortly after the NCAA Director-General, Chris Najomo, warned airlines over persistent delays, cancellations, crew shortages and other consumer-related violations.

Speaking on September 10, Najomo directed airlines to ensure that their flight schedules reflected the aircraft and crew available to operate them.

He questioned the effectiveness of existing scheduling buffers in the face of recurring disruptions, while acknowledging that weather conditions, flight diversions and airport restrictions could contribute to delays.

The NCAA boss stressed the importance of contingency planning and timely communication with passengers to minimise the impact of disruptions.
