Court sentences two to death for kidnapping NYSC staff

An Ekiti High Court has sentenced two men to death by hanging for kidnapping an official of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Omoboade Adesina, on April 22, 2022.

The convicts, Ibrahim Abubakar and Abdullahi Abubakar, were found guilty of abducting Adesina, while a third defendant, Usman Abubakar, was discharged after the court held that the prosecution failed to establish his involvement in the crime.

The three men were arrested by operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) and subsequently arraigned.

Delivering judgment, Chief Judge of Ekiti State, Justice Lekan Ogunmoye,  convicted Ibrahim and Abdullahi and sentenced them to death by hanging.

Ogunmoye held that the prosecution proved its case beyond reasonable doubt.

The judge said the identification parade conducted during the investigation and the analysis of call data records were key pieces of evidence that linked the convicts to the offence.

He, however, discharged and acquitted Usman after finding insufficient evidence to connect him with the kidnapping.
