Nigeria’s senior men’s basketball team, D’Tigers, revived their hopes of qualifying for the 2027 FIBA Basketball World Cup after securing an impressive 100-84 victory over Cape Verde on Sunday evening.
The win moved Nigeria to a 5-4 record in the qualification campaign, keeping the team firmly in contention for one of the available spots at the global tournament.
Caleb Agada led Nigeria’s scoring with 26 points and six assists, while Josh Okogie delivered an all-round performance with 15 points, eight rebounds, 10 assists and four steals.
Efe Obogidi contributed 11 points, while captain Ike Nwamu added 14 points as Nigeria produced a much-improved offensive display.

Head coach David Fizdale said the victory was crucial to keeping Nigeria’s qualification ambitions alive.
“We needed that win to stay in the fight and give ourselves a chance. I told the guys if we get to five wins, we are within striking distance of qualifying in the next window.”
Fizdale was also pleased with the team’s improved shooting after struggles in their opening games.
“I was really happy; finally, we made 3s because we just couldn’t make shots the first two games,” he added.
