Voters in Enugu State are awaiting the declaration of results after voting and counting ended in Saturday’s local government elections.
The election was held across the state’s 4,145 polling units and 260 political wards, with voters casting ballots to elect 17 local government chairmen and 260 councillors.
The exercise was largely peaceful, although turnout was relatively low in several polling locations.
At Ashishi Owo Ward 1, Polling Unit 007, accreditation and voting took place simultaneously, with voters turning up to exercise their franchise.
Governor Peter Mbah joined the queue at about 11am to cast his ballot.
Voters also participated in the election in Igboeze North, Igboeze South, Udenu and Nsukka Local Government Areas.
Seven political parties participated in the exercise, with the Enugu State Independent Electoral Commission, ENSIEC, assuring stakeholders of a successful electoral process.
The state has continued to conduct local government elections since the return to the Fourth Republic in 1999, with the polls providing an avenue for residents to elect officials to administer affairs at the grassroots.
With sorting and counting completed at polling units, attention is now focused on the collation and declaration of results by ENSIEC.
