Europe’s leading clubs have made their first league appearances of the 2026/27 season, with Barcelona, Real Madrid, Arsenal, Inter Milan, Manchester City, Juventus and AC Milan all securing victories, while several other heavyweights were forced to settle for draws or suffered surprise defeats. According to Goal and Sky Sports, Arsenal opened their Premier League title defence with a convincing 3-0 victory over newly promoted Coventry City, while Manchester United suffered a shock 2-0 defeat away to Hull City. Tottenham also endured a difficult start, losing 3-0 to Brentford, while Liverpool were held to a 2-2 draw by Newcastle United.
Arsenal’s victory was one of the most straightforward results among the Premier League’s major clubs. The reigning champions controlled the contest against Coventry and completed a comfortable three-goal victory, immediately putting themselves among the early leaders. Their result also provided an encouraging start to their attempt to retain the title.
Manchester United, however, experienced the opposite. The Red Devils were beaten 2-0 by newly promoted Hull City, producing one of the biggest shocks of the opening weekend. United struggled to create enough attacking threat and were ultimately punished by a Hull side that showed little fear against one of England’s most decorated clubs.
The defeat immediately placed attention on United’s attacking options and overall performance, particularly because Hull were returning to the Premier League. The hosts’ goalkeeper Konstantinos Tzolakis was also singled out for an impressive debut as Hull secured a memorable victory.
Tottenham suffered another heavy setback, losing 3-0 to Brentford. Spurs were unable to find a response after falling behind and were ultimately beaten comfortably. Brentford’s performance was particularly impressive, with debutant Mamadou Sangaré among the players who attracted attention for his display.
Liverpool, meanwhile, left St James’ Park with a point after a dramatic 2-2 draw against Newcastle. The match remained finely balanced before Dominik Szoboszlai converted a late penalty to rescue a point for Liverpool. The result means the Reds began the campaign without a victory, although the late equaliser prevented what would have been a damaging defeat.
Manchester City also had to fight from behind before eventually securing a 2-1 victory over Bournemouth. Bournemouth took the lead through Marcus Tavernier in the 26th minute and held onto their advantage for much of the match. City eventually found a way back into the contest when Marc Guéhi headed in the equaliser in the 85th minute, before Joško Gvardiol scored the stoppage-time winner after a VAR review confirmed the goal.

The comeback was particularly significant for City manager Enzo Maresca, who secured a winning start in his first home league match in charge. Rather than dropping points after falling behind, City maintained their pressure and produced two late goals to turn the contest around.
In Spain, Barcelona made perhaps the strongest statement of the major European clubs with a 5-0 demolition of Elche. Raphinha opened the scoring from the penalty spot in the 14th minute and later added a second, while Fermín López also scored twice. New signing Karim Adeyemi completed the scoring with a first-half stoppage-time goal on his debut.
Barcelona’s performance was not only about the scoreline. The Catalan side produced a commanding attacking display and immediately underlined their ambition to defend the LaLiga title. Anthony Gordon also made an impact from the bench, providing two assists in the second half as Barcelona continued to overwhelm Elche.
The only concern for Barcelona came before half-time when Gavi was forced off after appearing to suffer a right knee injury. An official update on the midfielder’s condition was still awaited after the match.
Real Madrid also began their campaign with three points but needed a late winner to overcome Espanyol 2-1. Jude Bellingham put Madrid ahead in the ninth minute, only for Alex Calatrava to restore parity for Espanyol before half-time. The game appeared set to finish level until substitute Carlos Espí struck in the 90th minute to give Madrid victory.
The result offered Madrid an important opening victory, although their performance was considerably less emphatic than Barcelona’s. They had to remain patient and find a way through late in the contest, with Espí’s intervention ultimately separating the sides.
Atlético Madrid also dropped points in their opening fixture after being held to a 2-2 draw by Villarreal. Atlético had to fight back during the contest and were reduced to 10 men, but still managed to avoid defeat. The result leaves Diego Simeone’s side with a point rather than the perfect start they would have wanted.
Italy’s major clubs produced a more positive collection of results. Inter Milan made an emphatic start by beating Monza 4-1, immediately demonstrating their attacking strength and collecting three points in convincing fashion. Juventus also opened with victory, although their 1-0 success against Frosinone was considerably less spectacular.
AC Milan completed the winning start for another Italian heavyweight, defeating Torino 2-1. Under new coach Ruben Amorim, Milan secured the three points and gave their new campaign a positive beginning.
Paris Saint-Germain were among the European giants unable to win their opening league match. The Champions League holders were held to a 2-2 draw by Rennes after falling two goals behind. Rennes established a 2-0 lead before Ferran Torres scored twice late in the match to rescue a point for PSG.
The result was particularly notable because Torres marked his PSG debut with both goals, turning what looked like a defeat into a draw. PSG therefore had to settle for one point despite entering the campaign among the strongest favourites in France.
Taken together, the opening results underline the unpredictability of the early stages of a European season. Barcelona provided the most emphatic display among the clubs considered, while Arsenal and Inter Milan also made strong statements with convincing victories.
Real Madrid and Manchester City showed a different kind of strength by securing wins despite being pushed all the way. Their victories demonstrated the value of persistence, with both clubs producing decisive moments late in their respective matches.
For Manchester United and Tottenham, however, the opening weekend could hardly have been more different. Both clubs suffered three-goal or two-goal defeats and will need immediate improvements before their next league fixtures.
Liverpool and Atlético Madrid will also see their draws as opportunities missed, while PSG’s comeback against Rennes at least prevented an opening-day defeat.
With only the first round of fixtures completed, it is too early to draw firm conclusions about the title races. Nevertheless, the opening weekend has already established several early narratives: Barcelona have started with a statement victory, Arsenal have begun their title defence strongly, Real Madrid have shown late resilience, Manchester City have demonstrated their ability to recover from adversity, while Manchester United and Tottenham have been handed early reminders of the challenges ahead.
The 2026/27 European season is therefore already off to a dramatic start, with the continent’s biggest clubs facing very different fortunes as they begin their respective battles for domestic honours.
