The Federal Government has commissioned a 581kWp interconnected solar mini-grid to provide electricity to about 13,000 residents of Oke-Oyi community in Kwara State.
The project, implemented by the Rural Electrification Agency (REA), comprises 1,336 solar panels and 84 batteries, alongside about 10 kilometres of distribution cables and transformers.
The intervention extends electricity connections to residential and productive users in the community, with the government saying improved power supply is already supporting increased economic activity.
According to the project details, 12 welding businesses, two pure water companies, four grain mills and four aluminium artisan businesses have emerged in Oke-Oyi following improved electricity access.
The project has also supported one ice-block production business and a cold-room/ice-fish depot.
Three electricity vendors are currently operating in the community, while three additional vendors, including a female entrepreneur, are expected to be registered.
The project was developed by Nayo Tropical Technologies Limited with support from German Cooperation and the European Union through GIZ.
The government said the intervention is designed to “expand access to reliable electricity while supporting economic activities and improving livelihoods” in Oke-Oyi.
