Lagos State University (LASU) has retained its position as the top university in West Africa in the 2026 UI GreenMetric Sustainable University Rankings, rising 267 places globally to rank 493rd among 2,016 institutions across 110 countries.
The latest ranking was announced at the UI GreenMetric Sustainable University Rankings 2026 Results and Awards Ceremony in Baku, Azerbaijan.
LASU, which ranked 760th globally in 2025, moved to 493rd this year, marking its strongest performance since joining the sustainability ranking.
The university has also maintained its No. 1 position in West Africa for the fifth consecutive year, having topped the regional ranking in 2022, 2023, 2024, 2025 and 2026.
The latest result continues a steady improvement in LASU’s global standing.
The university ranked 799th globally in 2024 before moving to 760th in 2025 and 493rd in 2026, representing a 306-place rise over two years.
The UI GreenMetric ranking assesses universities based on their performance in areas including setting and infrastructure, energy and climate change, waste management, water, transportation, education, governance and digitalisation.
LASU said the 2026 result reflects its efforts to integrate sustainability, environmental responsibility and innovative practices into its institutional operations.
In August 2026, the university also received renewed recognition within the UI GreenMetric network, with its national and regional coordinatorship renewed and its role elevated to co-chairmanship of key sessions at UI GreenMetric international events for the 2026/2027 academic session.
The university attributed the latest achievement to the collective efforts of its management, staff, students, units and committees involved in advancing its sustainability agenda.
Vice-Chancellor, Professor Ayodeji Olawunmi Badejo, congratulated the entire LASU community and commended those contributing to the university’s sustainability drive.
The university said the latest ranking further strengthens its ambition to consolidate its position as a leading institution in Africa in sustainability, innovation, responsible governance and institutional development.
