Nigerian comedian and content creator, Debo Adebayo, popularly known as Mr Macaroni, has opened up about the financial difficulties he faced in recent years, while expressing gratitude to people who supported him during what he described as one of the hardest periods of his life.
Mr Macaroni spoke in a post on X on Saturday, following widespread reactions to stories from people who recounted instances of his generosity towards them.
The reactions were sparked in part by veteran Nollywood actor, Peter Fatomilola, who revealed how Mr Macaroni gave him ₦200,000 after a movie shoot and later paid him ₦1 million for a single scene in another production.
Fatomilola, in an interview with Africa List, said Mr Macaroni had also given money to his son and grandson who accompanied him to the set.
Following the accounts shared about his kindness, Mr Macaroni said he became emotional after seeing messages from people recounting things he had done for them, many of which he said he could no longer remember.
He wrote, “I cried so much last night and this morning. I have seen lots of messages from different people about things I did for them at different times most of which I don’t even remember.”
According to him, he has always believed that the reason God gave him resources was to give back to others.
“I think this is God’s way of telling me to also be thankful!!! I have been thinking too much about what I lost instead of thanking God for seeing me through one of the hardest moments of my life,” he said.
Mr Macaroni explained that he was accustomed to giving and rarely asking for help because people assumed he was financially comfortable.
He said he had difficulty seeking assistance and would repay any money he borrowed, often with interest, even when the lender did not demand it.
However, he said the situation changed in recent years when he found himself needing help and had to seek assistance from people around him.
“I was tested in ways I couldn’t understand these past few years. I asked for help everywhere and anywhere I could think of and I was on the verge of giving it all up!” he said.
The comedian also revealed that an unnamed person repeatedly came to his aid and eventually helped him settle all his debts.
He said the individual had asked not to be publicly identified, adding that he regarded the person’s intervention as an act of God.
“God used one person to settle all that I owed! And this help came over and over again! I don’t think any sane person would do what he did for me without God’s intervention!” Mr Macaroni wrote.
He also thanked his close friends, Don Jazzy, footballer Victor Osimhen and Pastor Bolaji for their support.
“To my closest people in the World (Mr Macaroni & Friends) Thank you for not neglecting me even when you had every reason to. Thank you for saving me,” he wrote.
Addressing Don Jazzy, he said, “Thank you from the bottom of my heart for all you do, not just for me but for so many others.”
Mr Macaroni said he was now in a better place and had learnt important lessons from the difficulties he experienced.
He added that despite the challenges, he had no regrets about helping people and making their lives better whenever he could.
“I don’t and will never regret anything I have ever done in my life to make the lives of others better in even the smallest way possible,” he said.
The content creator said the experiences had also given him greater clarity and made him grateful for the trials he had faced.
