The Federal Government has reaffirmed its determination to end insecurity in Nigeria through proactive operations, strategic planning and stronger collaboration with state governments.
The Minister of State for Defence, Bello Muhammad Matawalle, stated this on Monday in Kano during a condolence and assessment visit to the Kano State Government House following the bandit attack on Chiroma Village in Garun Mallam Local Government Area of the state on August 29, 2026.
Matawalle assured the Kano State Government and residents that the administration of President Bola Tinubu remained committed to defeating insecurity and restoring lasting peace across the country.
According to a statement by Queeneth Iheoma-Hart (CIO), for the Director, Information and Public Relations, the Ministry of Defence on Tuesday, the minister disclosed that President Tinubu had constituted a committee to develop a five-year defence and security plan to guide the government’s long-term response to security threats.

“The President has constituted a committee to develop a Five-Year Defence and Security Plan. This will guide our long-term approach to tackling security threats across the country,” Matawalle said.
The minister also disclosed that troops had launched a swift joint rescue operation following the attack, leading to the rescue of kidnapped victims in parts of Garun Mallam LGA.
He said the operation was led by the Commander, 3 Brigade, Kano, Brigadier General Jimoh, alongside personnel of the Joint Task Force from Hawan-Kwano and Kwanar Dangora camps.
According to him, the victims were rescued around Yan-Kifi Bridge and Marabar Kwari areas of Garun Mallam.
Matawalle commended the troops for their courage and prompt response, assuring that the Federal Government would continue to strengthen the operational capacity of the Armed Forces and other security agencies.
“We will continue doing everything possible to support our security services to ensure our country is safe. I assure you that soon, insecurity will be a thing of the past, and we will all live in peace and prosperity,” he said.
The minister stressed the need for collective action by the federal, state and local governments, as well as citizens, to effectively tackle insecurity.
“It takes the combined effort of local government, state and federal levels to tackle this issue of insecurity. We also need timely and credible information from citizens to security agencies,” he stated.
Matawalle further assured Kano State of increased Federal Government support, including the deployment of additional fighting vehicles, weapons and other operational equipment to strengthen security operations in the state.
Earlier, the minister held a closed-door security meeting with commanders of 3 Brigade and other security formations in Kano, where he directed them to sustain ongoing operations and intensify efforts to secure communities.
He reiterated the Federal Government’s determination to provide the resources and support required to protect lives and property, as well as safeguard the territorial integrity of the country.
The Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, thanked the minister for the visit and pledged the state government’s continued collaboration with the Federal Government on security matters.
“We are confident in your leadership. At the state level, we will continue to do what needs to be done to ensure security and stability in Kano,” the governor said.
Yusuf added that the state government would support President Tinubu’s commitment to tackling insecurity, saying, “We have heard the President’s commitment to security in Nigeria, and we will ensure that the menace of insecurity does not remain in our domain.”
