The Federal Government has inaugurated a 1,500-bed hostel project at Yaba College of Technology, aimed at improving student accommodation, welfare, and overall learning conditions.
Speaking at the launch in Yaba on Friday, the Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa, said the facility would feature not only residential spaces but also recreational and commercial areas to enhance students’ living experience.
He noted that the project aligns with the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, which prioritises better learning and living environments across the country.
According to the minister, the government plans to invest about ₦250 billion in hostel infrastructure across more than 90 tertiary institutions nationwide. He added that the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) would ensure strict compliance with infrastructure standards to deliver measurable and timely results.
“Education goes beyond the classroom. Student accommodation must support comfortable living, social interaction, and effective learning,” Alausa said, stressing that projects would be completed within agreed timelines.
He also highlighted ongoing government support for students and institutions through financial aid, grants, and welfare programmes, noting that partnerships would be leveraged to accelerate delivery and expand access to safe and decent housing.
The minister further disclosed that lecturers are benefiting from improved welfare packages, including interest-free loans and enhanced research funding. He announced plans for a National Research Development Fund expected to generate over $500 million annually.
In his remarks, the Rector of YABATECH, Ibraheem Abdul, described the project as a symbol of renewed hope for students, beyond mere infrastructure. He commended TETFund and Integrated Projects Ltd. for their roles and assured transparent execution and close monitoring.
Also speaking, the Chairman of the institution’s Governing Council, Funso Afolabi, said the hostel would significantly reduce accommodation challenges and boost academic excellence on campus.
