Akwa Ibom State Governor, Pastor Umo Eno, has rallied behind Nigerian-born British boxer Moses Itauma ahead of his International Boxing Federation (IBF) World Heavyweight Championship fight against Croatian Filip Hrgovic in London on Saturday, August 29, 2026.
In a statement on Friday, Eno congratulated Itauma for carrying the “Akwa Ibom spirit of excellence and competitive drive” onto the global boxing stage, urging him to make the state and Nigeria proud in the historic bout.
The governor said Itauma would be carrying the hopes of Akwa Ibom and Nigeria when he steps into the ring at the O2 Arena.
“On behalf of the Government and people of Akwa Ibom State, I salute you for carrying the Akwa Ibom spirit of excellence and competitive drive into the world of boxing,” Eno said.
He described the bout as an “epochal moment” for Itauma, noting that the young boxer would be representing the collective dreams of Akwa Ibom and Nigeria as he battles Hrgovic for the vacant IBF heavyweight crown.

“As you step into the ring tomorrow, I want you to know that we are all rooting for you,” the governor said.
Eno also drew parallels between Itauma’s journey and the achievements of Nigerians excelling in sports and entertainment on the global stage.
He referenced wrestler Obafemi “OBA” and Nigerian music stars including Burna Boy, Davido, Wizkid, Tems and Rema, saying Itauma now had an opportunity to add boxing to the list of areas where Nigerians are making their mark internationally.
“I urge you to go out there, Eyen Nyin, and show the world that you represent the emerging spirit and passion of the Akwa Ibom Exceptionalism in boxing,” he said.
Eno further urged Itauma to seize the opportunity and deliver a performance that would inspire Nigerians.
“Akwa Ibom is arising with you, the nation too, is with you in this moment of national boxing renewal. Go and get it done!” the governor said.
Itauma, 21, enters the contest unbeaten with 14 professional victories, including 12 knockouts, while Hrgovic has 20 wins and one defeat, with 15 of his victories coming by knockout.
A victory for Itauma would see him make history by becoming the youngest British world heavyweight champion.
