Vincent Kompany has expressed frustration at missing the touchline during Bayern Munich’s record-setting defeat to Paris Saint-Germain.
The Bayern head coach watched from the stands as his side fell 5-4 in a nine-goal UEFA Champions League semi-final first leg in Paris, serving a suspension that ruled him out of the dugout for one of the competition’s most dramatic encounters.
Kompany frustrated after missing ‘spectacle’
Kompany admitted the experience of watching from afar was far from ideal, describing the situation as a missed opportunity to influence a high-intensity contest.
“Well, it’s no fun,” he said. “When two teams start a game with such mindset, this can happen. I had a feeling a game like this was in the cards.”
Despite conceding five goals away from home, the Belgian pointed to positives in Bayern’s attacking output.
“If you concede five goals on the road, it’s usually over, but we scored four and could certainly have scored two or three more in this game,” he added.
Kompany also praised his coaching staff, led on the touchline by assistant Aaron Danks, for maintaining energy and structure during the chaotic encounter.
“The team doesn’t just deserve credit for the comeback, but my staff as well. They were the ones who kept up the energy and mentality,” he said.
Bayern boss calls for full Allianz Arena support
Looking ahead to the return leg in Munich, Kompany made a direct appeal to Bayern supporters, stressing the importance of atmosphere at the Allianz Arena.
“We can score goals, and we’ll be able to do that at home, too. The belief and the feeling are 100 percent there. We need our fans. We need support,” he said.
In a pointed message, he added: “If someone has bought a ticket and isn’t feeling well on the day of the match, please stay home and give your ticket to the fittest person they can find.”
“We need the fittest people to deliver the full force of the Allianz Arena.”
Bayern must overturn a one-goal deficit to reach the final, with Kompany clear on the immediate objective.
“All that’s required of us is that we win the game,” he said.
