In every generation, a political figure emerges whose story transcends ambition and becomes a symbol of resilience, loyalty, vision, and uncommon service. In Enugu State today, that figure is undoubtedly Ikeje Asogwa.
.
Since news filtered through that he has emerged as the APC flag-bearer for the Enugu North Senatorial bye-election, social media platforms have remained electrified with excitement and celebration. Beyond the digital buzz, torrents of congratulatory messages have continued to pour in from admirers, associates, and supporters both within and outside Nigeria.
.
And truth be told, the excitement is richly deserved. Ikeje Asogwa’s political journey has been defined by exceptional performance, imaginative resourcefulness, project execution, and effective service delivery in every public office he has occupied. Little wonder he is fondly called “Stainless.”
Yes, he is called Stainless because he delivers, and when he delivers, he leaves no stain.
.
Yet, there is a side of Ikeje that remains largely under-appreciated: his inexhaustible reservoir of patience, loyalty, and dedication. As the Director-General of Dr. Peter Mbah’s 2023 governorship campaign, he traversed every nook and cranny of Enugu State alongside his principal, often returning late at night exhausted, hungry, and panting for breath after grueling campaign activities.
.
Needless to say, three years after the inauguration of the administration, Ikeje has not occupied any public office, yet he remained unfazed. Rather than complain or withdraw, he redoubled his support for Dr. Peter Mbah and the government. If I were ever asked to design a curriculum on patience, dedication, and loyalty, I would gladly use the character and political journey of Ikeje Asogwa as a model. But how exactly did this extraordinarily eventful political journey begin?
.
By the early 2000s, Ikeje had already built substantial wealth through real estate, first in Lagos and later in Abuja. In the buildup to the 2007 General Elections, he stormed Enugu from Abuja with a burning determination to contest for the governorship of the state.
.
Though relatively unknown in mainstream political circles at the time, he took the state by storm and, within a short period, raised the political temperature to a fever pitch. A dynamo of energy, he moved like wildfire across the state, sweeping through communities like a cyclone. His message, vision, and connection with the youth resonated powerfully across Enugu State.
.
His campaign flyers, T-shirts, and caps became everyday fashion items among the people. Radio stations blared his campaign songs endlessly, billboards carried his image across the state, and crowds thronged after him everywhere he went.
.
Sensing an imminent political earthquake, the government of the day responded with strategic political wisdom. Ikeje was persuaded to drop his governorship ambition and support the candidature of His Excellency, Sullivan Ihenacho Chime. And true to his character, he agreed. Thus, his political odyssey became yet another testament to patience, loyalty, and dedication.
.
I have read several essays celebrating his achievements in the various offices he has held, and I commend those efforts. However, permit me to set some records straight. Some writers claimed that Ikeje employed one thousand teachers during his tenure as Chairman of ENSUBEB. No — the figure was far higher than that. The actual number was seven thousand five hundred employees: five thousand academic staff and two thousand five hundred non-academic staff.
.
I also came across claims that he built three hundred classroom blocks. Again, that is inaccurate. The actual figure stands at one thousand four hundred and forty-seven classroom blocks.
.
These are verifiable records. Anyone in doubt can walk into ENSUBEB and confirm the facts. The records are there.
Some people call Ikeje “The Magician,” and not without reason. He appears to operate with a magic wand. There is hardly any office Ikeje Asogwa has stepped into that he did not transform in a remarkably impressive manner.
.
Today, the Housing Corporation has become one of the most attractive and sought-after public institutions in Enugu State. But who truly paid attention to the corporation before Ikeje transformed it with his administrative ingenuity?
.
At a critical moment of unprecedented political uncertainty in the state, Ikeje was once again called into action. He stepped in as PDP Chairman, stabilized the structure, and, as they say, the rest is history.
.
Interestingly, his residence in Zoo Estate is called Ground Zero, while his loyal associates are fondly known as the Men of Ground Zero. Again, this is not without significance. It symbolizes a place where ordinary people begin from scratch and rise into relevance, influence, and greatness.
.
For the good people of Enugu North Senatorial Zone, this moment signals the beginning of a new dawn and the unfolding of a fresh political chapter. The foremost duty of a Senator is to be the authentic voice of the people, and Ikeje Asogwa is naturally suited for that responsibility. He is vocal, fearless, result-driven, energetic, and deeply connected to the grassroots.
.
As for the employment opportunities, empowerment programmes, strategic appointments, youth development initiatives, and capacity-building prospects that his representation is expected to attract to the zone, let me not pre-empt the future. After all, the taste of the pudding, they say, is in the eating.
.
What is undeniable, however, is that Ikeje Asogwa represents more than a political candidacy; he embodies hope, resilience, proven leadership, and the promise of effective representation. His story is one of loyalty rewarded, patience tested, and service validated by results.
.
May God bless our beloved Enugu State.
May God bless the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
.
And may the journey to Abuja mark the beginning of greater things for the people of Enugu North Senatorial Zone.
Ikeje ejebe Abuja!
