The Embassy of Japan in Nigeria has opened applications for the 2027 Japanese Government (MEXT) Scholarship Programme for Nigerian students interested in studying in Japan under different academic categories.
The scholarship programme, organised through the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) of Japan, covers Research, Undergraduate, College of Technology (KOSEN), and Specialised Training College categories.
According to a statement on the embassy’s official website on May 7, 2026, interested applicants are expected to carefully study the application guidelines and complete all required documents before submission, as incomplete applications will not be processed.
The embassy directed applicants to the official scholarship guides for each category. Research student applicants can access the guide through https://www.studyinjapan.go.jp/en/smap-stopj-applications-research.html while undergraduate applicants can check https://www.studyinjapan.go.jp/en/smap-stopj-applications-undergraduate.html.
Applicants interested in the College of Technology (KOSEN) category are to use https://www.studyinjapan.go.jp/en/smap-stopj-applications-technology.html while candidates for the Specialized Training College category can access the guideline through https://www.studyinjapan.go.jp/en/smap-stopj-applications-specialized.html.
The application deadline for all categories is Monday, 8 June 2026.
The embassy stated that all application documents must be submitted together with the required checklist, which can be downloaded from https://www.ng.emb-japan.go.jp/itpr_ja/11_000001_00768.html.
All completed application packages are to be submitted physically either in person or through postal delivery to the Embassy of Japan in Nigeria, MEXT Selection Committee, No. 9 Bobo Street, Off Gana Street, Maitama, Abuja.
The embassy stressed that no online or email submission will be accepted under the programme.
Applicants for the Research category must be born on or after 2 April 1992, while applicants for Undergraduate, College of Technology, and Specialised Training College categories must be born on or after 2 April 2002.
The embassy also instructed applicants to clearly write the document number shown in the application documents table at the upper right-hand corner of the first page of every submitted document.
Applicants were warned to ensure that all sections of the forms are properly filled, noting that failure to provide accurate information could lead to disqualification.
The embassy further stated that original academic transcripts must be included in the application package. However, photocopies of graduation or degree certificates may be accepted if they are properly attested by an authorised university official. Applicants were also advised not to submit original certificates because submitted documents will not be returned.
For candidates applying under the Research category, the embassy warned that selected courses must align with the submitted research plan. It explained that applicants whose selected academic courses do not match their research proposals may not be accepted by Japanese universities under the scholarship programme.
Nigeria Startup News reports that only successful candidates will be contacted during each stage of the screening process and noted that there are additional screening criteria not included in the public notice.
