The Kano State Government has signed contracts worth N21.29 billion with two Chinese construction companies for the rehabilitation of major water treatment plants in the state.
The state’s Acting Commissioner for Water Resources, Dahir Hashim, disclosed this in a statement issued on Thursday in Kano.
Mr Hashim said the contracts were awarded for the rehabilitation of the Tamburawa, Challawa and Goron Dutse water treatment facilities as part of efforts to improve water supply across the state.
According to him, N9.9 billion was awarded to CGC for the rehabilitation of the Tamburawa Water Treatment Plant, while N11.39 billion was awarded to CCECC for the rehabilitation of the Challawa and Goron Dutse facilities.
The commissioner, who also serves as the state Commissioner for Environment, said the projects were approved by the State Executive Council under the leadership of Governor Abba Yusuf.
He noted that the intervention is aimed at revitalising the state’s water distribution network and addressing longstanding infrastructure challenges affecting water supply.
Mr Hashim explained that the state’s combined water production capacity currently stands far below expectations due to the deteriorating condition of key facilities.
According to him, the Tamburawa plant is operating at only 27 per cent of its installed capacity following flood damage, while the Challawa facility is producing less than 30 per cent of its potential output.
“Today, I formally signed major contracts with CGC and CCECC for the comprehensive rehabilitation of the Tamburawa and Challawa Water Treatment Plants.
“This historic move follows the recent approval of the State Executive Council under the leadership of His Excellency, Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, aimed at revitalising our state’s distribution network and ending longstanding infrastructure challenges,” he said.
The commissioner added that the projects are expected to help the state reclaim its combined daily water production capacity of 370 million litres.
“With N9.9 billion awarded to CGC for Tamburawa and N11.39 billion to CCECC for the Challawa and Goron Dutse facilities, we are taking decisive action to reclaim our combined 370 million litre daily design capacity,” he added.
Mr Hashim urged the contractors to ensure quality execution of the projects within the stipulated eight-month completion period.
He reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to providing sustainable public infrastructure and improving access to potable water for residents.
“This administration remains fully committed to sustainable public infrastructure, ensuring that safe, potable water reaches every metropolitan household and surrounding community,” he said.
