The Kano State chapter of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has postponed its planned state congress for the election of party executives.
NewsWatch Nigeria reports that the postponement was announced in a statement signed by the Director-General of Social Media for the NDC in Kano State, Adam Said Adam.
According to the statement, the party said the decision became necessary following the recent entry of prominent political figures into its fold.
The State Chairman of the NDC in Kano, Hon. Husaini Isah Mai Riga, explained that the influx of new members had created the need for wider consultation and better preparation ahead of the congress.
Mai Riga said the party needed more time to properly accommodate the new entrants and ensure that the congress was conducted in a smooth, transparent and inclusive manner.
He noted that going ahead with the congress without making adequate arrangements for the new members could affect the inclusiveness of the exercise.
The chairman added that the party would communicate a new date for the congress after all necessary preparations had been concluded.
He assured members and supporters of the party that the postponement was in the best interest of the NDC in the state.
Mai Riga said the leadership remained committed to building a stronger structure in Kano and ensuring that all stakeholders were carried along in the process of electing new party executives.
The statement urged party members to remain calm and await further communication from the state leadership on the new date for the congress.
