Nigeria recorded 500 security incidents between July 27 and August 31, 2026, with the North accounting for two-thirds of the incidents, according to EONS Intelligence’s Nigeria Security Index for August.
The report recorded 86 armed attacks, 46 kidnapping incidents, 55 cult-related incidents, 18 protests and 295 other security-related incidents nationwide during the period.
The North recorded 334 incidents, representing 67 per cent, while the South accounted for 166 incidents, or 33 per cent.
Weekly incidents peaked at 144 in Week 33, according to the report.
Zamfara recorded the highest number of incidents with 45, followed by Niger with 41, Lagos 38, Sokoto 37 and Borno 28.
Other states with high incident figures were Plateau with 24, Delta 22, Osun 21, Kaduna 20 and Oyo 18.
EONS Intelligence identified several major security developments during the period, including more than 40 deaths and over 100 abductions in Borgu, Niger State, 23 deaths in Mangu, Plateau State, and more than 50 deaths in a boat mishap in Sokoto State.
The report also highlighted increased kidnapping activities in Zamfara, Kebbi and Sokoto, persistent improvised explosive device threats in Zamfara and Borno, school closures in Gwadabawa, Sokoto State, and election-related violence in Osun State.
It assessed the North as the epicentre of lethal violence, while political and cult-related threats remained significant security concerns in parts of southern Nigeria.
