Real Madrid defender Raul Asencio has been handed a fresh legal setback after being convicted of driving under the influence of alcohol, just days before he is due to appear in court over a separate case that could result in a prison sentence.
According to GOAL, the 23-year-old defender is scheduled to appear before a court in his hometown in Gran Canaria next Thursday over a case dating back to 2023. The case centres on a video involving two women, one of whom was a minor at the time, recorded during a holiday involving several Real Madrid academy players.
Asencio was not involved in recording the video and did not appear in it. However, prosecutors allege that he showed the footage to another person, leading to an investigation into an alleged breach of privacy.
Spanish prosecutors have previously requested a prison sentence of two years, six months and one day for Asencio. However, the defender could avoid criminal liability if the two women formally accept his apology, which would allow prosecutors to withdraw the charges.
The case involving Asencio is separate from proceedings against three former Real Madrid academy players, Ferran Ruiz, Andrés García and Juan Rodríguez. They face different allegations relating to the recording and distribution of the video, with their cases unable to be resolved through the same form of victim pardon available to Asencio.
Asencio’s latest legal problem concerns an incident on August 16, when police stopped him while he was driving in southern Gran Canaria. A breathalyser reportedly recorded an alcohol level of 0.90 milligrams per litre, close to four times the permitted limit.
The offence resulted in a €14,400 fine and an eight-month driving ban, according to the Spanish reports cited by GOAL.
The latest development adds to a difficult period for Asencio, who has also been dealing with injury problems. He has been sidelined by a problem with his shin after previously recovering from a quadriceps injury, with reports indicating that he could require surgery if his latest treatment does not resolve the issue.
Asencio has also been linked with a possible departure from Real Madrid after reports indicated that manager Jose Mourinho does not currently regard him as part of his plans for the new season.
With his court appearance approaching and the separate drink-driving conviction now added to his off-field troubles, Asencio faces an uncertain period as he attempts to resolve his legal situation and return to football.
