Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has declared that he remains firmly in charge of the political structure in Rivers State, dismissing speculation that his return to the state is part of plans to relocate ahead of the 2027 elections.
Wike, who has been in Rivers since last Friday, said he returned to reconnect with his people and personally assess developments in the state.
The former governor said his presence was not about relocating but about ensuring that he remained in touch with the people rather than depending on reports from officials.
“It’s about coming home to relate with the people and talk with them and also do those things you know how to do very well, not to take chances,” he said.
Wike said he needed to see things for himself and question those responsible for delivering projects and services.
“I don’t want to sit down there and say, ‘Oh, don’t bother, everything I say I agree.’ I have to come and see all those things that are going on. What have you done? Have you done this? What about this?” he said.
On his political influence in Rivers, Wike struck a confident tone, describing himself as the leader of the state’s political structure.
“I’m the general commander of the political factor here. I’m the commander of the political structure of my state. So that’s why I’m in charge,” he said.
His comments come amid heightened political manoeuvring in Rivers State as politicians and political groups position themselves ahead of the 2027 general elections
