The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) is to receive 30 operational vehicles and 60 computers under an 18-month project aimed at strengthening border surveillance and management across the country.
The initiative is being implemented by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) with financial support from the Government of Italy, through the Ministry of the Interior’s Department of Public Security – Central Directorate for Immigration and Border Police.
The project was officially launched on Thursday, September 24, 2026, at the United Nations House in Abuja during a high-level meeting convened by UNODC.
Speaking at the event, Comptroller General of Immigration, Kemi Nanna Nandap, expressed appreciation to the Italian government and UNODC for their continued support towards strengthening the operational capacity of the Service.
Nandap said the provision of the vehicles and computers would improve the mobility of immigration personnel, border surveillance, digital infrastructure and overall operational efficiency, particularly in remote and high-risk border locations.
She said the intervention would help strengthen the presence of NIS personnel at strategic border points and improve the Service’s ability to effectively monitor and control Nigeria’s borders.
Italy’s Ambassador to Nigeria, Roberto Mengoni, reaffirmed his country’s commitment to supporting Nigeria’s efforts to improve border management and institutional capacity.
The UNODC Country Representative, Cheikh Toure, said the participation of senior officials at the launch demonstrated the importance attached to the project and its significance to Nigeria’s border management system.
Toure said the project was designed to address existing mobility and technology gaps confronting border management operations in Nigeria.
The NIS said it would ensure the judicious use of the equipment and deploy the support towards strengthening border management, national security and the promotion of safe, orderly and regular migration.
