A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress(APC), Faizu Alfindiki, has said many people in the North are surprised by the perceived political closeness between former Kano State Governor, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, and former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi.
Alfindiki said Kwankwaso’s political direction had raised questions among some Northerners who expected him to focus more on building stronger unity among leaders in the region.
NewsWatch Nigeria reports that the politician made the remarks while speaking with journalists in Kano on Monday.
The APC stalwart, who is also a former Chairman of Kano Municipal Council, said the North needed stronger cooperation among its political leaders to protect its interests and strengthen its voice at the national level.
He said, “Many Northerners were surprised that Kwankwaso appears more interested in aligning with Obi’s political camp instead of building stronger unity among Northern leaders.”
According to him, the region requires leaders who will place collective interest above personal political calculations.
He added, “The North needs leaders who will focus on unity and work together for the development of the region.”
Alfindiki also criticised Obi, saying the former Anambra State governor had not shown enough concern for major issues affecting the North.
He listed insecurity, agriculture and economic development as some of the areas where he claimed Obi had not spoken strongly enough.
He said, “He is rarely heard speaking on major Northern challenges like insecurity, agriculture and economic development in the way many people would expect.”
The APC chieftain argued that political alliances should be based on shared concerns and clear commitment to the development of all parts of the country.
Kwankwaso’s Choices May Send Wrong Signal
Alfindiki further argued that Kwankwaso’s political decisions could create the impression that personal ambition was being placed above collective regional interest.
He said, “In politics, one is judged by their stance and the type of alliances they build. The people of the North need leaders who will unite to protect the region’s political integrity.”
He urged political leaders in the region to close ranks and work together on issues that affect the North, especially security, agriculture, youth employment and economic development.
Despite his criticism, Alfindiki called on politicians across the country to form alliances that would promote national unity rather than deepen political or regional divisions.
He said political cooperation should be driven by the need to solve national problems and strengthen democratic governance.
The APC chieftain maintained that Nigeria needed leaders who could build bridges while still protecting the legitimate interests of their people.
Alfindiki also praised the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, saying ongoing projects in infrastructure, road construction and agriculture showed commitment to national development.
According to him, the administration’s efforts in key sectors justify continued support for the President ahead of future elections.
He said Tinubu’s government had shown that it was willing to take decisions aimed at repositioning the country for growth, adding that Nigerians should support policies that promote development and stability.
