League leaders Galatasaray suffered a shocking and heavy 4-1 defeat at the hands of Samsunspor in a Round 32 Trendyol Süper Lig clash at the Samsun Yeni 19 Mayıs Stadyumu on Saturday.
Despite an early goal facilitated by Victor Osimhen, the visitors crumbled to a dominant Samsunspor side that found the back of the net four times, putting a dent in Galatasaray’s title celebrations.
Galatasaray got off to an ideal start, taking the lead in the 9th minute through Yunus Akgün.
The goal was orchestrated by Nigerian striker Osimhen, who provided the assist. However, that was the last bright spot for the reigning champions.
Samsunspor hit back before the break
Samsunspor responded in the 22nd minute with an equalizer from Marius Mouandilmadji, set up by Yalçın Kayan. The teams went into halftime level at 1-1.
Second-half collapse costs Galatasaray
The second half was a disaster for the league leaders. Cherif Ndiaye scored in the 57th minute to put Samsunspor ahead at 2-1. Mouandilmadji added his second goal in the 71st minute to make it 3-1.
The misery for Galatasaray was compounded when Günay Güvenç was sent off in the 63rd minute.
Samsunspor then sealed the emphatic 4-1 victory with another goal from Cherif Ndiaye in the 82nd minute.
Title race implications
While Osimhen showed his value with a key pass for the opening goal, he and the team could not hold back a rampant Samsunspor side, who secured a historic win over the visitors.
Despite the heavy defeat, Galatasaray remained top of the league standings with 74 points, but the result allows competitors like Fenerbahce to narrow the gap with two matches remaining.
