The Osun State Election Violence Relief Committee has commenced its assignment, calling on victims of election-related violence to submit their claims for consideration.
The committee made the appeal in a statement by the Chief Press Secretary to the Speaker, OSHA, Olamide Tiamiyu, on Thursday, August 27, after its inaugural meeting held on Thursday and chaired by the Speaker of the Osun State House of Assembly, Adewale Egbedun.
According to the statement, the committee has a humanitarian and sensitive responsibility to identify genuine victims, verify their claims and ensure that appropriate relief is provided to those affected by the violence.
Egbedun, who spoke at the meeting, assured victims and the public that the process would be conducted fairly and transparently.
The statement said the committee had already received and collated a number of complaints but would continue to accept submissions from other affected persons.
It particularly urged victims still receiving treatment in hospitals over injuries sustained during the incidents to come forward through their relatives or representatives.
According to Egbedun, the committee would liaise with hospitals where necessary to verify the condition of injured victims and facilitate the provision of appropriate medical care.
He also assured victims, their families and hospitals that the government remained committed to covering the approved cost of treatment for eligible cases.
“Every submission will be carefully considered,” Egbedun said, stressing that decisions would be based on “facts, fairness and compassion.”
The committee chairman also commended the Adeleke Dynasty for its intervention to support children who lost their parents or benefactors during the election violence.
He disclosed that the dynasty, through the Springtime Development Foundation, had indicated its intention to provide scholarships to children whose parents died in the violence.
Egbedun described the initiative as a demonstration of compassion towards families affected by the incidents, saying education could help preserve the hopes and future of children who had lost their parents.
According to the statement, he said the support would give affected children “hope, dignity and an opportunity to build a brighter future despite their circumstances.”
“As Chairman of the Election Violence Relief Committee, I commend this initiative and assure the Adeleke Dynasty and the Springtime Development Foundation of the Committee’s appreciation and support in ensuring that the gesture reaches the intended beneficiaries transparently and effectively,” he said.
Egbedun reiterated the committee’s commitment to ensuring that genuine victims were not overlooked, while pledging that the relief process would remain credible, transparent and responsive to the needs of affected persons.
He also expressed appreciation to members of the committee for accepting the assignment and wished them a successful commencement of their work.
The inaugural meeting comes as the Osun State Government moves to address the humanitarian consequences of recent election-related violence and provide support to affected individuals and families.
