The Osun State Police Command has arrested four suspects over the violent attack on police officers in Ikire that left two passers-by dead, three policemen injured and an AK-47 rifle stolen.
Commissioner of Police Ibrahim Umar Zungura announced the arrests during a press briefing on Thursday, saying the suspects were apprehended on Wednesday following intelligence gathering and technical analysis.
The suspects are Sikiru Ademola Adedeji, 21; Olalere Taiwo, 21; Olalere Ademola, 26; and Bankole Abiodun, 20.
The attack occurred on Monday, August 24, when officers led by the Divisional Police Officer responded to a distress call at the Naira and Kobo area of Ikire.
According to police, about 30 armed hoodlums overpowered the officers and snatched an AK-47 rifle from one of them.
Police said the gang’s alleged leader, identified only as Ayewo, used the stolen rifle to fire repeatedly, injuring three officers and two passers-by, who later died.
A cutlass-like object was recovered from the arrested suspects.
During interrogation, the suspects allegedly confessed to being political thugs and identified Ayewo as the leader of their faction and the person who fired the stolen rifle.
The police said efforts were underway to arrest Ayewo and other suspects still at large.
Zungura commended the investigating officers for their professionalism and assured residents that everyone involved in the attack would be brought to justice.
He also urged members of the public to provide credible information to help the police prevent crime and apprehend fleeing suspects.
