The Plateau State Police Command has recovered a General Purpose Machine Gun (GPMG) and an AK-47 rifle during an operation targeting suspected armed criminals in Barkin Ladi Local Government Area.
The operation was conducted by personnel of the 81 Police Mobile Force (PMF) following intelligence on the activities of suspected bandits operating around Kafi Abu in the area.
According to a report by Channels, the command, in a statement issued by its Police Public Relations Officer, SP Alfred Alabo, said the operation took place at about 8:23 pm on Friday, August 28, 2026, when the police team, led by the Commander of 81 PMF, Bassa, moved into the bush area to confront the suspected criminal elements.
According to the statement, the suspects fled into the surrounding forest immediately after sighting the police operatives, abandoning the weapons in their possession.
A subsequent search of the area led to the recovery of one GPMG bearing breech number T1102-20CH00007, identified as a SARSILMAZ SAR762 MT, as well as an AK-47 rifle with breech number 1968M117479.
The development is considered significant in the police command’s efforts to disrupt the operations of armed groups and prevent them from gaining the capacity to carry out attacks in communities across Plateau State.

Following the operation, the Commissioner of Police, Plateau State Command, CP Ayodeji Faniyan, ordered the deployment of additional personnel to the general area as efforts continue to track down and arrest the fleeing suspects.
The command has also commenced investigations into the incident, with the police assuring that further information would be made available as the investigation progresses.
Plateau State Commissioner of Police, CP Ayodeji Faniyan, praised the officers who participated in the operation, describing their efforts as a demonstration of bravery and dedication to maintaining security across the state.
Faniyan said the command would continue to strengthen intelligence-driven operations and proactive policing strategies to prevent criminal activities and safeguard residents and their property.
He also called on members of the public to stay alert and provide security agencies with timely information on suspicious persons, movements or activities within their communities.
