The Enugu State Police Command has arrested a suspected armed robber and cultist, Osani Joseph, during a raid in Enugu metropolis.
Joseph, 28, was arrested by operatives of the Anti-Cultism Sub-Unit of the Violent Crime Response Unit, VCRU, at a criminal hideout in the New Artisan area of the state.
The command’s spokesperson, SP Daniel Ndukwe, disclosed this in a statement on Saturday.
Ndukwe said the suspect, who lives at Premier Layout, Enugu, was arrested at about 8:30 p.m. on May 26 during an intelligence-led operation.
According to him, police operatives recovered a silver-coloured imitation handgun, a dagger, 10 wraps of a substance suspected to be methamphetamine, popularly known as Mkpuru Mmiri, and a sachet containing a substance suspected to be cannabis.
The police said Joseph allegedly confessed to using the gun-like object to rob unsuspecting members of the public.
He also allegedly admitted being a member of the Supreme Vikings Confraternity.
Ndukwe said investigations were ongoing to identify and arrest other members of the suspect’s alleged criminal network.
He added that Joseph would be prosecuted after the conclusion of investigations.
The Commissioner of Police in Enugu State, CP Bitrus Giwa, restated the command’s commitment to fighting crime and criminality across the state.
Giwa urged residents to remain vigilant and law-abiding, while also supporting the police with timely and credible information.
