Afrobeats singer Chidozie Godsfavour Ugochinyere, popularly known as Fave, has said female artists face additional challenges in the Nigerian music industry because they are often judged by factors beyond their musical talent.
Speaking in a recent episode of the Afropolitan Podcast, Fave said female artists are often assessed based on their appearance, dressing and sex appeal before their music is considered.
She said the situation places female artists under pressure to meet certain expectations about their physical appearance.
In her words:“It is harder for female artists to blow. Female artists aren’t measured by talent but by what they wear. If your tummy isn’t flat… It is never really about the music; it is more about people’s sexual desires or their fantasies about you.

“And I think that right there is a problem, because it becomes more about how decently you are dressed before people listen to you. But when it comes to men, they aren’t held to that same standard.”
She said the emphasis on appearance can shift attention away from the music and talent of female artists.
She also pointed out that male artists are not subjected to the same standard when it comes to their appearance and dressing.
The singer further claimed that despite the challenges female artists face in the Nigerian music industry, they perform better than their male counterparts.
