Former Super Eagles captain and Al-Ahli defender William Troost-Ekong has converted to Islam after reportedly reciting the Shahadah in Doha, Qatar.
The development was reported by Qatari newspaper Al-Arab on Wednesday, with the 33-year-old said to have recited the testimonies of faith while in the Qatari capital, where he currently plays for Qatar Stars League club Al-Ahli.
Islamic cleric Dr Muhammad Salah also shared a video on his verified Facebook account showing the Nigerian defender reciting the Shahadah.
Troost-Ekong moved to the Arab region in the summer of 2024 when he joined Saudi Arabian side Al-Khaleej.
He later signed for Qatari club Al-Ahli in January 2026 on a one-and-a-half-year contract and has since made 14 appearances across all competitions, including one appearance in the current season.
At international level, Troost-Ekong represented Nigeria between 2015 and 2025, earning 83 caps and scoring eight goals.
He was a key member of the Super Eagles squad that reached the final of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Côte d’Ivoire, where he was named the tournament’s best player.

The defender also represented Nigeria at the FIFA World Cup and Olympic Games, establishing himself as one of the country’s most experienced defenders over the past decade.
Troost-Ekong enjoyed a distinguished international career with the Super Eagles, making more than 70 appearances for the national team.
