UEFA has introduced a new Champions League Debut Patch for the 2026/27 campaign to recognise players making their first-ever appearance in Europe’s premier club competition.
The new initiative, announced on UEFA’s official website, will see players marking their Champions League debut wear a distinctive patch on the sleeve of their shirts when they make their first appearance in the competition.
UEFA said the initiative was introduced in collaboration with UC3 and Topps to “recognise and celebrate players making their bow in the UEFA Champions League.”
According to the European governing body, the patch is designed to place players at the centre of a significant career milestone while creating a connection between the debut on the pitch and fans beyond the match.
“The Debut Patch is a new initiative introduced by UEFA and UC3, in collaboration with Topps, to recognise and celebrate players making their bow in the UEFA Champions League,” UEFA said.
The patch will only be valid when a player makes an on-pitch debut, meaning it will also apply when a player enters a Champions League match as a substitute.
It will be incorporated into the existing Champions League Starball badge worn on the sleeve of players’ jerseys and is scheduled to be introduced from Matchday 1 of the new campaign.
UEFA said the patch would provide clubs, broadcasters and partners with a visible way of recognising a player’s Champions League debut as it happens.
The initiative also introduces a memorabilia element. After a player makes his or her debut, the distinctive blue debut element of the patch will be removed from the match-worn shirt and authenticated.
The patch will then be securely packaged with a Certificate of Authenticity before being transferred to Topps.

Topps will subsequently incorporate the patch into a one-of-one trading card featured in a UEFA Champions League product, which will be signed by the player.
UEFA said the process would turn a player’s first appearance in the competition into a unique piece of football memorabilia while maintaining the authenticity and provenance of the patch.
“This process is designed to protect the provenance and integrity of every patch from the moment it leaves the player’s shirt through to its inclusion in the final product,” UEFA said.
Following the removal of the debut element, the underlying Champions League badge will retain a visual reference to the player’s first appearance, allowing the match-worn shirt to remain a personal piece of memorabilia.
UEFA said the design and positioning of the patch were developed in collaboration with Topps and official patch supplier ID Unlimited.
The governing body also clarified that the Debut Patch is a one-time feature for each player.
“Once a player has made their UEFA Champions League debut, they will not wear the patch again – including if they later transfer to another club participating in UEFA club competitions,” UEFA said.
