Before taking his own life in their $1.2 million home, a wealthy American restaurateur kills his pregnant wife and two children.
The posh River Oaks neighborhood of Houston has been rocked by a terrible occurrence in which a well-known businessman is suspected of killing his pregnant wife and their two little children before committing suicide.
Matthew Mitchell, a 52-year-old restaurateur and former pharmaceutical executive, was named as the suspect by the authorities. On Monday night, he was discovered d+ad in their $1.2 million house with his wife, Thy Mitchell, 39, and their two children, ages four and eight. All four victims died from gunshot wounds, according to police.
Around 5:26 p.m., Houston Police Department officers arrived at the property in response to a request for a welfare check. A babysitter and a relative who hadn’t heard from the family in more than a day expressed concern.
The youngsters were reportedly found in their beds when the bodies were discovered by the authorities upon admission.
In addition to being the CEO of the Texas Center for Drug Development, Mitchell and his spouse co-owned the eatery Traveler’s Table. In September 2025, the couple was named Houston’s “Restaurateurs of the Year.”
The wealthy community’s neighbors reacted shock, pointing out that such violence is uncommon in the neighborhood known for its opulent residences. After living there for almost 20 years, one local said the experience was unprecedented.
Although more information regarding the events has not yet been released, investigators are handling the case as a murder-suicide.
