Nine people, including seven schoolchildren, have been rescued after they were caught in a flood along the Nibo–Isiagu Road in Awka, Anambra State.
The incident occurred in the early hours of Tuesday, September 22, 2026, as the children and adults travelled along the affected route.
The Anambra State Police Command said its Safe School Operatives, working with community members, swiftly responded to the incident and moved the nine victims to safety.
However, one child remains unaccounted for, with police and community members continuing a search and rescue operation in the area.
The Command said the search would continue until the missing child is located and accounted for.
The Commissioner of Police, Anambra State Command, CP Nnanna Oji Ama, directed that the search operation be sustained and expanded.
Ama also urged residents around the affected route to assist the rescue effort.
He appealed to residents to “provide the Police and other responding agencies with any information that may assist in locating the missing person.”
The Command urged parents, guardians, school authorities and motorists to exercise extreme caution around flooded roads, bridges and waterways, particularly during periods of heavy rainfall.
It also advised parents and guardians to ensure that children do not attempt to cross flooded or otherwise dangerous routes.
The Police said it remained committed to protecting schoolchildren and would continue to strengthen collaboration with communities and relevant agencies under the Safe School Initiative to prevent avoidable loss of lives during emergencies.
