China has pledged RMB 200 million, approximately ₦40.3 billion, in grant assistance to Nigeria to support the implementation of development projects jointly agreed upon by both countries.
The Chinese Ambassador to Nigeria, Yu Dunhai, made this known during a meeting with the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Dr. Dunoma Umar Ahmed, in Abuja.
Yu said the grant formed part of China’s continued commitment to supporting Nigeria’s national development and economic growth.
He noted that relations between Nigeria and China had remained strong 55 years after the establishment of diplomatic ties, describing the bilateral partnership as an important pillar of China-Africa cooperation.
According to the ambassador, China-Nigeria relations have entered a new phase of high-quality development under the strategic guidance of Chinese President Xi Jinping and Nigerian President Bola Tinubu.
He said both countries had maintained close communication and coordination to implement agreements reached by the two leaders, as well as the outcomes of the 2024 Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) Beijing Summit.
Yu said the cooperation was aimed at ensuring that the benefits of the bilateral relationship translated into tangible gains for citizens in both countries.
“To further support Nigeria’s national development and economic growth, China will provide RMB 200 million in grant assistance to Nigeria for the implementation of projects agreed upon by the two governments,” he said.
Responding, Ahmed commended the Chinese government for its continued support for Nigeria’s economic and social development.
He said the grant underscored China’s commitment to Nigeria and reflected the longstanding friendship and cooperation between the two countries.
The Permanent Secretary assured that the Nigerian government would ensure the grant was effectively utilised and would continue to collaborate with China on the implementation of agreed areas of cooperation.
He added that both countries remained committed to deepening their partnership and expanding cooperation in ways that would deliver greater benefits to their citizens.
The development comes amid efforts by Nigeria and China to strengthen bilateral ties and expand cooperation across key sectors, with both countries reaffirming their commitment to shared development goals.
