Students of Igbobi College, Yaba, Lagos, have been encouraged to embrace discipline, excellence and purposeful living as they begin the 2026/2027 academic session.
The charge was delivered on Monday by the Principal of the College, Ven. Joseph Adediji, while welcoming students back to school and reaffirming his commitment to their academic success, character development, and overall welfare.
Addressing students during the school assembly, Adediji, dressed in the College uniform, delivered a message titled “I Will Be Great,” based on the biblical passage of Genesis 12:1–3.
The Principal said true greatness goes beyond wealth, popularity, social influence or personal achievements, stressing that genuine greatness is rooted in God, obedience and service to humanity.
Using the story of Abram, who was called to leave his comfort zone and embark on an uncertain journey, Adediji urged students to develop faith, discipline and determination in pursuing their goals.
Adediji reminded the students that gaining admission into Igbobi College was a privilege that comes with responsibility and urged them to maximise the opportunity by embracing hard work, good character and obedience.
“You have been brought here for a purpose. God has positioned you in Igbobi College to be trained, moulded and prepared for greatness. The question is whether you will embrace the discipline, hard work, character and obedience required to fulfil that destiny,” he said.
The Principal advised students to avoid distractions and negative influences while remaining focused on their academic, moral and spiritual growth.
He also urged them to uphold the legacy of Igbobi College, describing themselves as custodians of a heritage built by generations of distinguished alumni who have made significant contributions to Nigeria and beyond.
Among the notable former students he referenced were former Vice President Professor Yemi Osinbajo, former Lagos State Governor Babatunde Raji Fashola, and former Speaker of the House of Representatives Femi Gbajabiamila.

Adediji urged the students not only to admire the achievements of these personalities but to emulate the values of excellence, integrity, discipline and service that shaped their success.
“You are not called merely to succeed. You are called to become a blessing. The world does not simply need successful people; it needs men of character, men of integrity, men who will use their gifts and opportunities to make life better for others,” he said.
Meanwhile, parents and students expressed excitement over the introduction of shuttle buses by the school management to convey students from Angus Hall to their various hostels.
The initiative, described by parents as a significant improvement in the school’s resumption process, helped reduce transportation challenges and created a smoother return experience for students.
One of the parents, Mrs Afolasade, commended the leadership style of the Principal, praising his commitment to improving the school environment and introducing initiatives that benefit students.
She said Adediji’s passion, integrity and dedication had continued to inspire confidence among parents and members of the Igbobi College community.
The resumption assembly ended with prayers for the success of the new academic session, the College and the students’ future aspirations.
