Kanu Calls For Return To Grassroots Talent Discovery In Nigeria

Former Super Eagles captain Kanu Nwankwo has called for a deliberate return to grassroots sports development to discover and nurture young football talents across Nigeria.

Kanu said football development should not be concentrated in major cities, warning that talented players in rural communities were being left behind because they lacked access to organised competitions and professional scouts.

Speaking ahead of plans to host the Governor’s Cup in Adamawa State, the former Arsenal and Nigeria striker said the country needed to create structured pathways for young players to progress from community football to professional clubs and eventually the national teams.

According to Kanu, Nigeria must “return to the drawing board” in its approach to sports development by establishing systems that identify promising players early and provide them with the training and exposure required to build professional careers.

The Governor’s Cup is expected to provide a platform for talent discovery across Adamawa’s 21 local government areas.

Kanu said the best performers would be given opportunities to gain exposure to professional clubs and other football development programmes.

He said such initiatives would give young footballers a clearer pathway from grassroots competitions to professional football.

The initiative has received the backing of the Adamawa State Government, with Governor Ahmadu Fintiri assuring the organisers of the government’s support for the competition across the state.

Fintiri said Adamawa had a large pool of talented young footballers, particularly in rural communities, who needed the right platforms to be identified and developed.

The Governor’s Cup is therefore expected to serve not only as a state-wide football competition but also as a talent identification programme aimed at giving promising young players an opportunity to pursue careers in the sport.
