Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso has asked former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar to abandon his 2027 presidential ambition and support the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC).
Kwankwaso, the NDC vice-presidential candidate, made the appeal on Monday while receiving members of the Fulani Farmers Association at his Abuja residence.
The former Kano State governor said Atiku should step down for the NDC ticket, promising that he would be taken care of if the party wins the presidency.
“Step down for us; if we win, we will take care of you,” Kwankwaso was quoted as saying.
The appeal comes amid continuing efforts by opposition politicians to unite against President Bola Tinubu and the ruling All Progressives Congress ahead of the 2027 general election.
Atiku remains one of the major opposition figures seeking the presidency, while Kwankwaso, who contested the 2023 election as the presidential candidate of the New Nigeria Peoples Party, is now backing the NDC ticket as its vice-presidential candidate.
The disagreement over who should lead the opposition into 2027 has remained one of the key challenges facing attempts to build a broad coalition against the APC.
Kwankwaso’s latest appeal is likely to further intensify the contest for the opposition’s presidential ticket as political parties and their leaders continue negotiations ahead of the election.
