The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA)’s 66th Annual General Conference has officially kicked off with a keynote address by former liberian President, George weah who says that threats to democracy do not come only from the barrel of a gun in the night or a defeated leader’s refusal to hand over power, but from a situation where “the judicial institutions is unable to carry out their own duties.”

He called on lawyers to be fearless in their duties and help in protecting members of the bench.

he urged the delegates to ensure that the law is not used to perpetrate war or chaos but an instrument of humanity, transparency, truth and peace.

more than twenty four thousand lawyers are gathered from across the country for the annual conference which is holding at the main bowl of the yakubu Gowon Stadium, in the garden city.

the host state governor, Siminalayi Fubara charged members of the bar and bench who make up a major percentage of the NBA to go beyond limits in upholding the provisions of the constitution and promoting the rule of law.

The outgoing president, Afam Osigwe (SAN) also called on lawyers to push back on factors limiting limiting democracy in Nigeria such as tribalism and parochial tendencies while ensuring that governments remain accountable to the people.

This year’s event with the theme, Beyond Limits, brings together not just members of the Bar and the Bench, but policymakers, thought leaders and other stakeholders from across Nigeria and beyond for a week of robust conversations, networking and indepth reflections.
