A police officer, Inspector Abdulkadir Garba, popularly known as “Buratai,” has died after he was struck by lightning while carrying out his duties in Maiduguri, Borno State.
The tragic incident happened on Wednesday at about 2:19 p.m. near the Borno State Police Command headquarters in the Maiduguri Metropolitan Council area. Garba was reportedly managing and coordinating vehicle parking alongside another officer, ASP Wazani Adamu, when the weather suddenly changed.
According to a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer in the state, ASP Nahum Kenneth Daso, dark rain clouds had gathered and the officers attempted to move to safety before the rainfall began. Moments later, thunder struck, followed by a powerful lightning strike that hit both officers.
ASP Wazani Adamu survived the incident but sustained injuries and is currently receiving treatment. Inspector Garba, however, suffered severe burns and other injuries caused by the lightning strike and was later confirmed dead.
The death of the officer has thrown the police command and residents of the area into mourning. Colleagues described Garba as a dedicated and hardworking officer who was committed to his responsibilities. Many residents also said they knew him because he was regularly seen performing his duties around the command headquarters.
Sympathisers, family members, fellow officers, and friends have continued to pay tribute to the late inspector, praying for the peaceful repose of his soul and strength for his family during the difficult period.
The incident has also sparked conversations among residents about the dangers security personnel face while carrying out their daily duties, especially during harsh weather conditions.
