A passenger has died after jumping from a moving commercial bus during a lone accident at Ogunlana Junction, inward Ojuelegba, in Surulere, Lagos.
The incident involved a Volkswagen commercial bus with registration number LND 130 XR, which reportedly careered into a median pole around the Fallout area of Surulere.
According to preliminary security reports, the driver was allegedly under the influence of alcohol and had been driving recklessly shortly before the crash.
Motorists approaching the vehicle from behind reportedly had to exercise caution to avoid colliding with the erratically driven bus.
Amid the chaos, a male passenger reportedly jumped out of the moving vehicle in an attempt to escape and sustained serious injuries after hitting the ground.
He later died from the injuries sustained in the incident.
Operatives of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), who were conducting routine surveillance in the area, quickly responded after sighting the crash.
The officers secured the scene, managed traffic and removed the deceased passenger and the badly damaged bus from the carriageway, preventing what the agency described as the risk of a potentially serious secondary collision.
Police officers from the Area C Police Division, Ojuelegba, provided security at the scene, while officials of the State Emergency Management Agency (SEHMU) evacuated the remains of the deceased.
LASTMA described the crash as another reminder of the dangers associated with driving under the influence of alcohol, reckless driving and the use of mechanically defective vehicles.
The General Manager of LASTMA, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, urged commercial and private motorists to conduct thorough checks on their vehicles before every journey.
He specifically advised motorists to pay attention to braking systems, tyres, steering mechanisms and other critical safety components.
Bakare-Oki commiserated with the family of the deceased and reaffirmed LASTMA’s commitment to rapid emergency response, traffic management and prompt clearance of accident scenes to protect road users.
He also urged motorists to report accidents, vehicle breakdowns, traffic incidents and other road obstructions through the LASTMA toll-free short code 3367.
