US President Donald Trump has announced plans to immediately bar CNN, MS NOW and Politico from the White House, escalating his long-running dispute with several American media organisations.

According to the BBC, Trump made the announcement in a lengthy post on Truth Social on Friday, accusing the outlets of repeatedly publishing what he described as false reports about his administration.

Trump did not provide specific examples of reports that prompted the decision, while it remains unclear what the proposed ban would entail or whether journalists from the affected outlets would be barred from entering the White House grounds.

“Media outlets shouldn’t be able to constantly write or report fiction and lies when covering they’re covering the President of the United States, the trump administration or the United States of America,” Trump wrote. “Other news outlets to follow.”

The announcement is expected to face legal challenges from the affected media organisations and press freedom groups.

Reporters from CNN and Politico were still present on White House grounds shortly after Trump made the announcement.

The President’s post did not identify specific stories or reports that he said justified the move.

Trump and members of his administration have repeatedly clashed with White House journalists since he returned to office in January 2025.

In February 2025, the White House announced that it would take back control of the press pool with access to Trump, ending more than a century of arrangements under which the White House Correspondents’ Association had managed the pool.
